Let Them Eat Cake, Plymouth Green Grocer and Scrubby's Crisps

Yesterday I took a trip to Plymouth to visit Julie and Mark at Plymouth Greengrocer, This humble store sells a great range of fruit, vegetables, essential food items and most of all gluten free and dairy free produce. Yesterday was a special day as they held a gluten free day. On the recommendation of Kevin at I went in search of Lisa from Let Them Eat Cake,

This picture does not do Lisa's talent for making gluten free and dairy free goodies justice!
I was not disappointed. Lisa is a wonderfully smiley lady with a passion for food only surpassed by a talent for cooking. She positively bubbled with pride offering samples of her yummy cakes and savouries lovingly made without gluten and most without dairy too. I tasted lemon drizzle cake, chocolate brownie, victoria sponge and jaffa slice. For the gluten free (but dairy eating) there were savoury muffins and quiche too! I walked away with a smile on my face and a whole pork pie (yes dairy free and gluten free pork pie!), some brownie and jaffa slice and savoury muffins for hubby. The brownie and jaffa slice have all gone, enjoyed tremendously with much ooing and mmmming!
Mark and Julie are a wonderful pair who have been running Plymouth Green Grocer for the last 18 months. Originally a fruit and vegetable home delivery service in Plymouth they are also keen to become Plymouth's Premier Gluten Free Supplier. Their idea makes perfect sense to me as we all know that the key to a healthy, trouble free diet starts with great fruit and vegetables and attention to detail buying products that we can cook at home from scratch. I happily consumed their gluten free sausagemeat last night for dinner teamed with three bean casserole veg and mashed potato. I'm even more excited that not only do they currently ell chipolatas and sausagemeat but in the future they will be selling jumbo glutenfree sausages perfect for BBQ's. What a fantastic idea for all of us free from foodies to be able to join in with everyone else. Keep up the great work Plymouth GreenGrocer.
An added bonus was meeting Andy from @SW_FoodieAgent. A man with very particular tastes, Andy searches out the finest brands from the South West and makes them available for the rest of us to buy. He currently helps distribute a fine brand of vegetable crisps called Scrubby's. If you haven't heard of them yet search them out. Scrubby's make delicious vegetable crisps with less fat than ordinary crisps. They are also dairy free and gluten free. I have to admit they take on some unusual shapes in the cooking process and are worth eating just for a giggle. That aside they are an extremely tasty alternative to normal crisps. I will be buying them again soon.
The combination of great, friendly, free from foodies and a spot of sunshine was exactly the boost I needed. After seemingly endless days of rain and troublesome symptoms I am now completely refreshed with renewed hope for a more interesting diet. I also gained huge comfort from meeting local people with the same passion and enthusiasm for free from food as me. I hope your weekend has brought even a small slice of this dairyfree and glutenfree delight!
